A Country Carved by Water
Ukraine has more than 63,000 rivers and streams. Most drain into the Black Sea or the Sea of Azov, forming one of Europe's most extensive river networks. The rivers sustain wetlands that are among the continent's most important stopovers for migratory birds, and their floodplains support exceptional plant and fish diversity.
The Great Rivers
The Dnipro
The Dnipro (Dnieper) is Ukraine's central river — 981 km flow through the country before reaching the Black Sea. It divides Ukraine into its eastern and western banks and is deeply embedded in national identity. A series of reservoirs created in the Soviet era transformed much of the river, but natural stretches in the south, including the Dnipro-Orilska Nature Reserve and the Dniprovsko-Buzky estuary, support rich wetland ecosystems.
The Desna
A right-bank tributary of the Dnipro, the Desna remains one of Ukraine's most natural rivers. Its wide floodplain meadows, oxbow lakes, and gallery forests provide critical habitat for otters, white-tailed eagles, and spawning fish. The Desna River valley is protected within the Novhorod- Siverskyi Polesye National Park.
The Dniester
The Dniester runs 705 km through western and southern Ukraine, carving a dramatic canyon through Podillia — a landscape of limestone cliffs, ancient forests, and medieval fortresses. Its upper reaches in the Carpathian foothills are renowned for clean water and diverse aquatic life, including the huchen, one of Europe's largest freshwater fish.
The Southern Buh
Flowing entirely within Ukraine, the Southern Buh is unusual among major European rivers in being largely undammed along its main channel. Its rocky gorges in central Ukraine shelter rare plants and insects found nowhere else in the country.
Wetlands and Delta Life
Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve
Ukraine's share of the Danube Delta is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, hosting over 300 bird species and 100 species of fish.
White-tailed Eagle
One of Europe's largest eagles nests along Ukrainian river corridors, especially on the Desna, Dnipro, and Danube floodplains.
European Otter
Ukraine holds a healthy otter population thanks to its relatively intact river systems — one of the stronger populations in Eastern Europe.
